Adrianna Małolepszy: Słyszałam, że żeby stworzyć ten album tak jak chciałaś musiałaś zmienić wytwórnię. O co tam chodziło?
Nie sądzę, że MUSIAŁAM zmienić wytwórnię. Po prostu… Wytwórnia, z którą teraz pracuję, Sony, miała po prostu lepsze pomysły na tę nową muzykę. Nie było żadnych spięć. Czasami po prostu trzeba zmienić wytwórnię, zmienić ludzi…
Adrianna Małolepszy: Nowa energia?
Tak. Nie było żadnej dramy. Tylko miłość, a ja uwielbiam Universal. Byli bardzo mili.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Ten materiał jest bardzo personalny. Jak się czujesz wypuszczając w świat coś tak osobistego?
Bałam się. Bałam się opowiedzieć wszystkim o tym co przeżyłam, o błędach, które popełniłam. Ale myślę, że zwłaszcza w muzyce pop przyszedł czas na szczerość. Myślę, że fani powinni wiedzieć o co tak naprawdę w tym życiu chodzi. Że to nie tylko super imprezy i zabawa. Jest tyle różnych rzeczy. Chciałam po prostu być prawdziwa dla moich fanów.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Absolutnie. Wydaje mi się, że ma większy wpływ na słuchacza dlatego, że jest tak szczery. Popłakałam się słuchając Mama czy King of the Castle. Pomimo, że to nie są moje doświadczenia ani moje emocje to bardzo na mnie wpłynęły i jakoś się z nimi utożsamiłam. Myślę, że wiele osób może czuć podobnie. Jak się czujesz z tym, że to co stworzyłaś nie jest już tylko Twoje?
Nie wiem, Uwielbiam to. Najpierw piszę piosenki dla siebie, ale potem ludzie czerpią z nich inspirację, albo poczują coś słuchając mojej muzyki to to jest coś do czego dążę. Mój mały sekret i życzenie to zmienić trochę świat, a jeśli ludzie poczują tę muzykę to będzie dla mnie zmiana. To jest cudowne.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Zmieniasz świat. Choćby twój publiczny coming out w zeszłym roku. Czy to zmieniło jakoś Twoje relacje z fanami?
Tak. Dostaję wiele wiadomości od społeczności LGBTQ gdzie mówią mi, że pomogłam, albo że jakaś piosenka pomogła im się ujawnić. Albo od ludzi, którym jakaś moja piosenka pomogła w zmaganiach z ich psychiką. Jest tego dużo, ale zawsze staram się odpisywać. Bardzo doceniam te wiadomości. Mnie też one pomagają gdy mam gorszy dzień. Motywują mnie. Bardzo ważna jest świadomość, że to co robię ma sens.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Ma.
Zastanawia mnie czy kiedy piszesz piosenki takie jak właśnie King of the Castle gdzie opisujesz wiele lęku i bólu, czy patrzysz na sprawę szerzej czy skupiasz się tylko na opisaniu swoich emocji?
Myślę, że na początku wychodzi to z moich własnych doświadczeń, ale później oczywiście myślę też o innych. Czy mogą poczuć to co opisuję. Zdecydowanie chcę tworzyć piosenki, z którymi każdy może się utożsamić i je zrozumieć. Wszystko musi jednak być prawdziwe i wzięte z mojego życia.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Wiem też, że piszesz także dla innych artystów. Wiekszych i mniejszych nazwisk. Zastanawia mnie czy pisząc coś wiesz, że ta konkretna piosenka trafi do tego konkretnego artysty, czy raczej nie myślisz o konkretnych osobach?
Czasami mam przeczucie. Na przykład jeśli dany artysta właśnie przechodzi przez coś i ja właśnie napisałam o tym piosenkę, ale zwykle jest tak… Na przykład kiedy pracowałam z Miley Cyrus po prostu weszłyśmy razem do studia i rozmawiałyśmy o życiu, o naszych problemach i o fajnych rzeczach… O wszystkim.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Kiedy piszesz z kimś innym… Czy czujesz, że z kimś miałaś wyjątkową więź? Czy z jakimś artystą było Ci łatwiej tworzyć niż z innymi?
Tak, zdecydowanie. Justin Tranter i Sarah Hudson naprawdę mnie znają. Mamy ten sam rodzaj energii. Jesteśmy bardzo energetyczni, szybcy i dobrze się bawimy. Myślę, że kiedy piszesz o swoim życiu czasami jest nawet łatwiej gdy ktoś zadaje Ci odpowiednie pytania i prowadzi Cię do tego co chcesz przekazać. Lubię pracować w grupie. Uwielbiam przebywać z ludźmi i tworzyć razem muzykę.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Z różnych wywiadów dowiedziałam się, że pracowałaś nad tym krążkiem bardzo długo, i że na początku był on zupełnie inny. Możesz powiedzieć o tym coś więcej?
Kiedy zaczynałam moja kariera rozkręciła się bardzo szybko. Byłam młoda i po prostu robiłam muzykę. Robię to nadal, ale jakoś półtora roku temu poczułam, że chcę tworzyć coś trochę bardziej osobistego. W moim Życiu zdażyły się pewne rzeczy i poczułam, że muszę o nich opowiedzieć. Album, który miałam wtedy w rękach nie był tym czego chciałam. Był zbyt popowy, zbyt elektroniczny, zbyt radosny.
Wzięłam z niego mniej więcej połowę tamtego materiału, a potem wróciłam do studia i zaczęłam pisać bardziej osobiste rzeczy. Cieszę się, że to zrobiłam. Myślę, że było warto. Teraz to znacznie lepszy album niż 2 lata temu.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Biorąc pod uwagę taką zmianę brzmienia zastanawia mnie czego słuchasz na co dzień.
Dużo starszych rzeczy. Jak Lykke Li, Amy Winehouse… Ale też muzyki moich dobrych znajomych, Charli XCX, Tove Lo…
Adrianna Małolepszy: Co lub kto Cię inspiruje?
Jeśli chodzi o ten album to na pewno Lykke Li, Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton, Gorillaz…
Adrianna Małolepszy: Masz już jakieś wieści jak przyjmuje się płyta?
Tak. To jest cudowne. Dostałam 4 gwiazdki od magazynu NME. To dla mnie ogromne wyróżnienie. Ale też od wielu fanów. Moja skrzynka na Instagramie pęka w szwach. To świetne uczucie. Zawsze mówię jakiś to ważne, kiedy ludzie komentują, mówią, że podoba im się piosenka. To po prostu ważne. Tak długo pracowałam nad tym materiałem i uwielbiam dawać pozytywną energię.
Adrianna Małolepszy: To się wiąże z tą zmianą, o której wspominałaś. Co to dokładnie za zmiana? Masz jakąś wizję tego co chcesz osiągnąć?
Bardzo bym chciała, żeby każdy na tym świecie mógł być wolny. Być tym kim jest i mieć takie same możliwości. To frustrujące, że tak nie jest. Smutno mi z tego powodu. Wiem, że miałam wiele szczęścia, że mam tę karierę. Teraz mam głos publiczny i bardzo chcę bo używać.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Czy zawsze miałaś wsparcie w życiu?
Mam dobrych przyjaciół. Oni są dla mnie wsparciem.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Pytam, bo widzę w tych piosenkach wiele emocjonalnego zgiełku i zastanawiam się co robisz by odzyskać wewnętrzny spokój.
Mieszkam w Finlandii. Mamy tu wiele lasów. Mam domek lesie, jest jezioro, sauna… Więc zwykle uciekam tam. Jest wspaniale. To miejsce, w którym mogę się w 100 procentach zrelaksować, wyluzować i nie myśleć o pracy ani o negatywnych rzeczach.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Zwłaszcza teraz, kiedy wszyscy globalnie przechodzimy przez tak trudny okres. Jak sobie radzisz z tą sytuacją? W podobny sposób?
Czy to co się dzieje bardzo zmieniło Twoje plany związane z wydaniem albumu?
Tak. W stu procentach. To dziwne, że nie mogę zrobić zwykłej promocji, widzieć się z ludźmi na żywo, jeździć po świecie i grać koncertów. Czuję się zawiedziona, ale z drugiej strony to fajne, że można tak po prostu na chwilę odpuścić i skupić się na muzyce. Pisać, tworzyć…
Adrianna Małolepszy: Więc cały czas piszesz.
Tak, 24/7. Trudno mi przestać, bo to kocham. To takie moje hobby.
Adrianna Małolepszy: To cudowne. Bo ja czasami łapię się na tym, że spędziłam cały dzień w łóżku oglądając Netflix.
Tak! Też mam takie dni. Trzeba je mieć. Nie można tworzyć cały czas.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Masz jakieś swoje specjalne miejsce gdzie lubisz pisać czy wygląda to tak, że nagle w samochodzie wpada Ci do głowy pomysł i po prostu zaczynasz tworzyć?
W trakcie wszystkiego. Zwłaszcza właśnie w samochodzie, na środku drogi. Wtedy się denerwuję, że nie mam gdzie się zatrzymać i śpiewam do jakiegoś miejsca gdzie mogę stanąć. Ale, tak, piszę wszędzie.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Piszesz najpierw tekst czy muzykę?
Muzykę!
Adrianna Małolepszy: Zawsze fascynował mnie ten proces od momentu, kiedy komuś przychodzi do głowy pomysł do chwili, kiedy mam w ręce płytę.
Tak, czasem dziwnie jest myśleć o tym, że właśnie stworzyłam coś z niczego, ale w tym jest cała zabawa. Żeby tworzyć.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Czy masz jakąś piosenkę na płycie Have You Seen Her?, która jest dla Ciebie wyjątkowa?
Prawdopodobnie Mama i Loser. Po prostu były dla mnie ważne gdy je pisałam. Musiałam je napisać. Po prostu musiałam.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Bardzo przyciągnęło mnie także Final Fantasy.
Tak, też ją lubię.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Możesz powiedzieć o niej coś więcej?
Cóż, to jest breakup song, ale ma też inne znaczenie. Wydaje mi się, że odchodziłam… Tak jak z tym albumem, jak już mówiłam. Chciałam być bardziej szczera, bardziej prawdziwa. Zacząć nową kartę w mojej karierze. Myślę o tym szerzej. Kiedy się z kimś rozstajesz jest Ci źle, ale wiesz, że zmierzasz ku czemuś lepszemu i wiesz, że potem będziesz lepszą i silniejszą osobą. Tak jak i z tym albumem. Musiałam zostawić ten stary materiał i zrobić coś na nowo. To trochę dwie historie w jednym utworze.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Martwisz się krytyką, która może przyjść?
Nie. Staram się zawsze myśleć o pozytywnych rzeczach. Negatywne nastawienie nigdy nie wygra. Nienawiść nigdy nie wygra. Zawsze wygra miłość. Widać to. Koniec końców wszystko czego potrzebujemy to miłość i tylko miłość się liczy. Naprawdę. Pomimo, że to brzmi jak banał. Żaden hater nie będzie mnie nienawidził do końca życia. Kiedyś się zakocha i zrozumie, że życie nie jest takie złe i że nie musi nikogo nienawidzić.

ALMA is a Finnish singer songwriter behind songs like Mother’s Daughter and Slide Away by Miley Cyrus. The reason for our interview is the release of her debut album Have You Seen Her? out May 15th.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Big, big congratulations on your new album Have You Seen Her. Just came out, it’s amazing.

Adrianna Małolepszy: I’ve been listening to it for the last 3 days preparing for this interview.

Adrianna Małolepszy: It’s so different from your previous songs. The sound is so different and I’m honestly so impressed.
Thank you. That means so much. For real.
Adrianna Małolepszy: I’ve heard that you had to change labels to make it the way you wanted it. What was that about?
I don’t think I HAD to change labels. I think it’s just.. the label I’m with now, Sony, they just had better creative ideas for the new music. There was definitely no drama. I think sometimes you just have to change the label, change the people…
Adrianna Małolepszy: New energy?
Yeah. There was no drama. It was all love and I love Universal. They were super nice.
Adrianna Małolepszy: The material is so personal. How do you feel putting something so personal out there?
It was pretty scary. I was pretty scared to tell everybody about stuff that I’ve been through, mistakes that I’ve made. But I feel like especially in pop music it’s time to be honest and to be real. I feel like fans should know what this life is really about. That it’s not just about fancy parties and having fun. There’s so many things. I just wanted to be real for my fans.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Yeah absolutely. I personally feel like it being so real means it resonates more. I actually cried listening to songs like Mama and King of the Castle. Even though it’s not my experience or my emotions exactly I related to it a lot. I feel like a lot of people might feel the same way. How do you feel knowing that it’s not fully yours anymore?
I don’t know, I love it. First I make songs for myself, but then if people get inspired or get some feelings out of themselves when they hear my music that’s my goal. My little wish and my little secret is I wanna change the world a bit and for me change is if people feel the music and it feels amazing.
Adrianna Małolepszy: You are changing the world. With your last year’s public coming out and everything. Has it changed the way you interact with your fans?
Yeah, I get a lot of messages from LGBTQ people saying that I’ve helped, or a song have helped them to come out. Or some people with mental health issues they’ve got, some songs help them. A lot of different messages and I always try to reply to those thought sometimes there’s a lot, but I appreciate them. Those kind of messages keep me going If I have a bad day. They are so important for me too to hear that’s it’s worth to do this.
Adrianna Małolepszy: And it is!
I was wondering when you write songs like King of the Castle, where there is a lot of anxiety and hurt.. Hard things that maybe people find hard to talk about.. Do you see the bigger picture or is it just putting your emotions out there?
I think first it comes from my own personal experiences, but then of course I think about other people. Can they feel what I’m saying? I definitely wanna make songs that everybody can understand and relate to, but everything still has to be real and about my life.
Adrianna Małolepszy: I also know that you write for other people as well. Smaller names, big names.. all over the map. I wonder if while you’re writing you know that this specific song is gonna go to a specific artist or is it just that you have a song and it goes to someone else non specific?
Sometimes I have a feeling. Like this artist is going through this kind of stuff and I just made a song about this feeling and I might send some songs, but usually it’s just like… For example when I was working with Miley Cyrus, we just went to the studio together and we were talking about life and our struggles and fun stuff.. everything.
Adrianna Małolepszy: And when you write with someone else… Do you feel like you had a special connection with some artists? Was it easier with some than with others?
Yeah, for sure. Songwriters called Justin Tranter and Sarah Hudson, they really know who I am and we have the same kind of energy. We’re very energetic, very fast and we have fun. And I think when you’re writing about your life, sometimes it’s even easier when you have somebody asking you the right questions and kinda leading you towards what you wanna say. I really like to work in a group. I’m a group person. I love to hang around with people and make music together.
Adrianna Małolepszy: From different interviews that I’ve read one thing that I saw was that you’ve been working on this record for a very long time now and that it was a different record at the beginning. Can you talk more about that?
When I started, my career just started really fast and I think I was just young and doing music, which I am still, but I think maybe 1 and a half years ago I felt like I wanted to do something a bit more personal. things happened in my life where I just felt like I needed to talk about it and this album that I have in my hands doesn’t feel right. It’s too pop, it’s too happy, too electronic.
I took about 50% of it and put it on this record and then went back to the studio and started writing more personal stuff. I’m glad that I did it, cause I think it was worth it. It’s so much better of an album now than it was 2 years ago.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Since you had such a jump from the more electronic stuff to this more pop, personal sound, what do you listen to on a daily basis?
I listen to a lot of old stuff like Lykke Li, Amy Winehouse… But also my good friend Charli XCX, Tove Lo…
Adrianna Małolepszy: I’m looking for what inspires you, who inspires you…
For this record definitely Lykke Li, Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton, Gorillaz
Adrianna Małolepszy: Have you gotten any feedback already?
Yeah, a lot of great feedback. It’s been amazing. I got 4 stars from NME music magazine. That was a big thing for me and from so many fans too. My DM’s on Instagram blew up. It feels great and I always say, it’s so important that people comment, say that they like the song or whatever. It’s just important. I’ve been working on it for so long and I love to feed positive energy.
Adrianna Małolepszy: That kind of ties in with that change that you talked about. What is that change? Do you have a picture in your mind of what you wanna accomplish?
I would love if we would be able to be free in this world and everybody would be able to be who they are and have the same opportunities everywhere. It’s frustrating sometimes that not everyone has the same opportunities. It makes me sad. I know that I was very lucky that I got this career and now when I have a voice I really wanna use it.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Have you always had a good support system in your life?
I do have good friends. That’s my support system.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Cause I see a lot of emotional turmoil in your songs and I wonder.. Where do you go when that happens to find peace and balance of energy again?
I live in Finland so we have a lot of forests and we have a cottage in the forest, there’s a lake and a sauna.. So I usually just go there. It’s amazing. It’s a place where I can a 100% just relax and chill and not think about work or negative stuff so that’s where I go.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Especially right now with this hard time we’re going through worldwide. How do you cope with that? Is it the same mechanism?
Has it changed a lot in your life right now with the album coming out and the way you go about it?
Yes. 100%. It’s weird that I’m not able to go and do promo, see people live, travel around the world and do shows. It’s disappointing, but then on the other hand it feels kinda great to just relax for a second and focus on the music. Make new music and make new art.
Adrianna Małolepszy: So you’re still writing now.
Yeah, 24/7. It’s hard for me to just not write cause I love it. It’s like my hobby.
Adrianna Małolepszy: That’s amazing. Cause, you know, sometimes I find myself spending the whole day in bed watching Netflix.
Yeah! I have those days too. You have to have them. You can’t be creative all the time.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Do you have a special spot where you like to write or is it like, you have an idea in the middle of the road in the car and you’re just writing right there?
Just in the middle of everything. And especially that situation when I’m driving on a motorway and I’m just like „I can’t stop and record this!” so then I just sing it until I stop somewhere. But yeah, just random places.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Do you write the lyrics first or the music?

Adrianna Małolepszy: I’ve always been fascinated with the whole process of the idea coming to somebody’s head to me having a disc in my hand.
Yeah, it’s crazy for me sometimes to think that I just made something out of nowhere. But that’s the fun part of my career. To make, create things out of nowhere.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Out of the album, Have You Seen Her?, do you have a song that is the most special you?
The most special for me is probably Mama and a song called Loser. They were just important songs when I was writing. I had to write those songs. I had to just write them.
Adrianna Małolepszy: I was very drawn to Final Fantasy as well.
Yeah, I like that too.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Can you talk more about that song?
Obviously it’s a breakup song, but it’s also a bigger picture. I just feel like I was leaving… Also with this album like I was saying. I wanted to be more honest, more real. Kind of turn a new page in my career. I feel like it’s also a bigger picture. When you break up with somebody it feels bad, but you know you’re going towards something better and you know you’re gonna be a better and stronger person after that.
I feel like with this album too, I had to kind of turn the page. Leave that old album and do this new one, cause I knew I have something better in me.
It’s kinda like two stories in one song.
Adrianna Małolepszy: Are you ever worried about the criticism that might come?
No. I try to always think about positive things. Negativity is never gonna win, hate is never going to win. Love is always gonna win. We’ve seen it. We’ve seen it happening. In the end all we need is love and love is all that matters. Really. Even though it’s very clichè. No hater is gonna hate me the rest of my life. Someday they’re gonna fall in love and understand that life is not that bad. They don’t have to hate anybody.
