- All About Music: Karin, your musical journey began at the age of 14. What events or experiences from this period had the greatest influence on your work on your debut album „through the telescope”?
i feel like a broken record when it comes to this question haha, i’m gonna make a very long story short tho.
i was in art school and drawing and painting were my main ways of expressing myself but i got injured and i couldn’t draw anymore due to the injury which eventually led into me writing my first song.
that influenced my whole life since that’s how i ended up in the music industry.
if that never happened, i probably never would’ve gotten into music and i definitely wouldn’t of made an album
- You described that you don’t like to over-analyze your songs, focusing more on their emotional message. Can you explain what feelings and experiences you most wanted to convey to listeners on this album?
i write to deal with what’s going on in my head, kind of like as if i was journaling.
i mostly don’t know what i’m writing about until it’s out on paper or in my notes app.
i just write to deal with my thoughts and feelings and experiences.
- The singles „false gold” and „she” announce introspective lyricism and sonic exploration on your album. Can you tell us more about the creative process behind these songs and what they mean to you?
i started writing “false gold” in a car (which wasn’t a great idea because i get motion sick very easily) on my way from my family’s cabin in the mountains surrounded by a lot of nature which i think inspired a lot of the nature metaphors in that song.
“she” i wrote at like 3am because i have insomnia so i very often can’t sleep. i came across a little line in my notes app and i just decided to roll with it and see what it would turn into and it turned into this song.
- You mentioned working with Benjamin and Will as a game changer. What was this collaboration like on a daily basis and what made the energy between you work so well?
i think it all came down to amazing creative chemistry and mutual respect.
they let me experiment and try things out and change my mind.
and i love their work, that’s why i wanted to work with them in the first place so i put a lot of trust in them from the beginning.
- You were named „Discovery of the Year” at the Czech Republic Music Awards and also appeared on a billboard in Times Square. How did these achievements influence your artistic development and approach to music?
i don’t know honestly. it’s very hard to wrap my head around it and it’s very hard to grasp.
i’m really grateful for all the opportunities i had and all the achievements.
- Your songs touch on love, identity and mental health. Why did you decide to talk about these specific issues and how important is it for you that your music is a kind of dialogue on these difficult topics?
i never plan what i’m going to talk about or write.
i just write.
and what comes out happens to be these things.
it’s really just real life things that everyone deals with and i just happen to put them into songs and release them to the public.
- Appearing during New York Fashion Week is undoubtedly a great achievement. How does fashion influence your musical work?
i always loved fashion.
i actually really wanted to study costume design when i was younger. i also grew up around figure skating and dance so coming up with costumes for those performances was something i grew up with.
i always expressed myself through fashion and it’s a part of who i am but i wouldn’t say that fashion influences my music.
i’m just really authentic to who i am as a person and that includes expressing myself through fashion.
- Debuting at SXSW and performing as part of the SoFarSounds series is a big deal for any artist. What emotions accompanied you during these events and what do you remember most from these performances?
we’re talking about potentially playing so far sounds in the future, but i haven’t played those yet.
but all the different opportunities i had so far have been incredible and it’s been really cool to be able to play them, especially since i grew up watching most of them and seeing my favorite artists play them.
- How did the pandemic affect the process of creating and promoting your album? Have you had to adjust your plans or found new ways to connect with your listeners?
well during the pandemic i just started releasing music for the first time, like my first singles and first EP, so i wasn’t even thinking about an album during the pandemic.
but in general, the pandemic changed our society and how we function and it definitely immensely impacted and changed the music industry, which obviously affects my job.
- What are your future plans in terms of your music career? Are there any new projects or directions you would like to explore after the success of „through the telescope”?
i recently shot an indie movie and i may or may not have a few original songs in the soundtrack of that movie ;)
