Większość ludzi interesujących się muzyką co najmniej słyszała w swoim życiu nazwisko Parton. Zwykle kojarzymy je właściwie z jedną twarzą. Moim zdaniem nie słusznie. Dolly Parton to marka, legenda i wielki talent. Ale co jeśli Wam powiem, że ten talent i niesamowity etos pracy nie spoczęły w jej rodzinie tylko na niej?
Jej młodsza siostra, Stella Parton również ma na swoim koncie wiele powodów do dumy i karierę trwającą właściwie równie długo jak kariera Dolly.
Jej pierwszym hitem był singiel I Wanna Hold You In My Dreams Tonight wydany w 1975 roku i pochodzący z albumu o tym samym tytule. Jest to piękna, urocza ballada będąca tak naprawdę kołysanką! Stella napisała ją dla swojego małego wtedy synka i to jemu ją śpiewała. Do dziś słuchając jej słychać tę wyjątkową delikatność i miłość.
Sukces singla w zestawieniach zapewnił jej pierwszy kontrakt z wytwórnią płytową. Pod szyldem Electry, na przestrzeni drugiej połowy lat 70′. ukazały się kolejne 3 albumy studyjne artystki utrzymane w znacznie bardziej popowym klimacie, niż wcześniesze country’owe wydawnictwo. Okres ten przyniósł jej kilka bardzo rozpoznawalnych utworów jak na przykład Danger of a Stranger, choć ja osobiście jeśli chodzi o lata 77-79′ w dyskografii Stelli zawsze bardziej skłaniałam się do cudnego If You’re a Dream ukazujące rąbek niesamowitego talentu nie tylko wokalnego, ale także tego do pisania piosenek, którego przedsmak mieliśmy już przy okazji pierwszego singla.
Do moich ukochanych utworów z tamtego okresu należą również Wishing Well czy świetne The Rest of The Way.
Po zakończeniu kontraktu z Electrą wydała dwa krążki z dwoma różnymi niezależnymi wytwórniami, ale nie było jej łatwo. Zamknięty, hermetyczny światek muzyczny nie chciał dać jej szansy. Nie potrzebował kogoś kto ich zdaniem był tylko kopią odnoszącej już ogromne sukcesy siostry. To w jakim wielkim byli błędzie nie specjalnie ich ochodziło. Nie pomagały też plotki puszczane w eter przez nieprzychylne artystce osoby.
Nie tak prosto jest jednak złamać silny charakter. Ukształtowana przez dorastanie w naprawdę dużej rodzinie z jedenastką rodzeństwa, w domu w którym bardzo często z powodu biedy brakowało podstawowych rzeczy, oraz motywowana koniecznością podarowania dobrego startu synowi, którego wychowywała sama, nie poddała się.
Dużą rolę w tej wytrwałości ma też wiara artystki. Bóg jest dla niej ogromnie ważny i przewija si to nie tylko poprzez to jak żyje i co robi, jak choćby rozpoczęty kilka lat temu projekt Fun House Church, w ramach którego Stella co niedzielę dzieli się ze swoją publicznością fragmentami z Biblii i inspirującymi historiami ze swojego życia. Motyw wiary przewija się oczywiście także w samej muzyce, a piosenkarka ma na swoim koncie trzy pełne albumy z gatunku gospel.
Ta wytrwałość i wiara zwłaszcza w trudnym okresie zaowocowały czymś absolutnie wyjątkowym. Poniekąd zmuszona okolicznościami Stella podjęła kilka najważniejszych ruchów w swojej karierze. Zaczęła sama wydawać i produkować swoje płyty. Ludzie w biznesie nie zamierzali dać jej szansy? Trudno. Założyła swoją własną firmę produkcyjną Attic Entertainment, a zaraz potem wytwórnię płytową Raptor Records. Pod tym właśnie szyldem od połowy lat 90. aż do dziś ukazuje się jej materiał.
Być może powstały one z konieczności, ale dziś artystka wydaje się uwielbiać tę niezależność, która tak do niej pasuje. Wydaje co chce, kiedy chce i jak chce. W takim nieskrępowanym wydaniu możemy naprawdę docenić jej talent do pisania utworów, niejednokrotnie bardzo osobistych, poruszających odpowiednie struny i pod względem technicznym i muzycznym wykreowanych po mistrzowsku.
Jej muzyka, choć podawana pod ogólnym szyldem country, tak naprawdę zawiera w sobie wpływy wielu gatunków od wspomnianego już gospel, przez pop, aż po blues i tak naprawdę troszkę wymyka się ramom. Tak samo zresztą jak wolny ptak, który ją tworzy. Stella pomiędzy wydawaniem utworów i płyt, próbowała swoich sił w filmie, na scenie musicalowej oraz jako autorka książek, a nawet jako speakerka motywacyjna.
To ostatnie ściśle wiąże się z wielkim powołaniem artystki jakim jest wyrażana na wiele sposobów filantropia i chęć pomocy innym. W szczególności tyczy się to ofiar przemocy domowej, z którymi przez lata pracowała w formie warsztatów.
Jak sama mówi, chce dawać nadzieję i podkreślać wewnętrzną siłę, którą każdy ma szansę w sobie odnaleźć. Muszę przyznać, że naprawdę jej się to udaje. Patrząc na drogę jaką przebyła i co osiągnęła, sama zawsze w zgodzie ze sobą i na swoich zasadach wiele można od niej czerpać.
Zwłaszcza, że pomimo dość wyboistej ścieżki i długiego stażu wciąż tworzy, rozwija swój talent i próbuje zupełnie nowych formatów otwierających inne możliwości.
Po nagraniu fantastycznego albumu Survivor, złożonego praktycznie w całości z napisanych przez siebie piosenek, zajęła się czymś całkowicie niespodziewanym. Jej najnowszy projekt to podcast o nazwie Parton Me, Nashville, w którym, po raz kolejny całkowicie na swoich zasadach komentuje bieżące wydarzenia, dzieli się muzyką i prowadzi rozmowy z innymi artystami. W roli prowadzącej sprawdza się świetnie.
Stelli Parton nie da się podsumować jednym zdaniem. Jest to jedna z tych cech, które czynią ją wyjątkową. Jest niezależną artystką i kreatywną duszą, która nie boi się wyzwań czy krytyki.
Jednocześnie silna i uparta, ale i niesamowicie wrażliwa i delikatna, ma też ogromne poczucie swojej indywidualności oraz potrzebę wolności połączone z wielką dozą empatii.
Wszystko to odzwierciedlają jej działania i muzyka.
O jednym mogę Was zapewnić. Jeśli poświęcicie chwilę na zagłębienie się w jej twórczość ukaże się przed Wami niesamowicie złożony, niejednoznaczny obraz, który otworzy Wam drzwi do świata i emocji, których nikt inny Wam nie da.

Most of those who are interested in music have at least heard of the name Parton at some point in their life. Usually, when people hear it they automatically think of one very specific person. Dolly Parton is a household name, a legend and an extraordinary talent.
But what if I tell you that said talent in her family doesn’t end with Dolly?
Her younger sister, Stella Parton also has a lot of achievements to be proud of and a career in music just as long as that of Dolly’s.
Her first hit, a beautiful, sweet ballad called I Wanna Hold You In My Dreams Tonight, a take from an album of the same name was released in 1975. Interestingly, the song is actually a lullaby Stella wrote for her son. Even today listening to it you can feel that special gentle love she put in it.
The success of that song resulted in a record deal. The next three albums were released under Electra and were much more pop sounding than the previous country LP. They brought her a few signature songs, such as Danger of a Stranger, but personally when it comes to the 1977′ to 1979′ „Electra” period of Stella’s discography, I usually lean more towards the wonderful, whimsical If You’re A Dream, which shows even more of her increadible talent, not only as a singer, but also a songwriter.
Wishing Well and an awesome The Rest of The Way are a couple more of my favorites from that time frame.
Once the deal with Electra came to an end she released two more albums with two different independent labels, but times were not easy for her. The closed up, tiny, close minded music industry was not interested in a strong woman not afraid to stand up for what she wants or in what they thought was just a carbon copy of an already successful sister. How wrong they were about the latter, they didn’t care. The rumors spread by some important people who didn’t like Stella, really didn’t help either.
But it’s not that easy to break a strong soul. Shaped by a tough childhood alongside 11 siblings with very little to spare and powered by the desire to give her son the best start in life she possibly could as a single parent, she didn’t give up.
Her faith also played a big role in that. God is extremely important to her and it shows in everything she does. A good example of that is a project called Fun House Church which she started a few years ago. Every Sunday Stella takes time to share passages from the Bible and inspirational stories with her audience with whom she’s built a very special bond with over the years.
Of course the theme of faith is also present in her music, represented for example by 3 gospel albums she has under her belt.
That faith and perseverance, especially in the trying time of financial struggle with no contract, resulted in something very special and unique at the time. Somewhat forced by circumstance Stella made some of the most important decisions of her career.
No one wanted to give her a chance? She was gonna take matters in her own hands! In the 90s she started her very own production company called Attic Entertainment and her own independent label Raptor Records soon after. To this day that’s how she releases her music.
They may have been born out of necessity, but today Stella seems to thrive in the freedom and independence they bring. It suits her the way nothing else ever could. She puts out exactly what she wants, how she wants, when she wants. That unrestricted way of things allows the audience to really see and appreciate her artistic abilities and songwriting talents. Her songs are often very personal, powerful and truly masterfully crafted.
Even though her music is generally marketed as country it actually is a mixture of a lot of different genres. From the previously mentioned gospel, through country, pop or blues. It’s just as much outside of the box as the artist herself. In between making records and releasing songs she tried a variety of different things. From movies, Broadway, book writing to motivational speaking.
The speaking especially is very closely tied with another huge passion and calling of hers. Philanthropy and helping others in many forms. A lot of her focus in that regard falls on domestic violence. Shedding light on the scale of the problem and helping the victims through her speaking and classes.
In her own words Stella wants to be „a messenger of hope” and I have to say, so far, she’s truly succeeded. Looking at her journey, at everything she’s done and accomplished, on her own, while always staying true to herself and following her own gut, she really is a source of some serious inspiration.
There’s also the fact that regardless of being in business for many years and the journey being rough a lot of the time, she always seems to be looking for new opportunities, new ways to evolve and to enrich her talents and skills even more.
After the release of her amazing 40th studio album Survivor made mostly out of songs she’s written herself, she started a completely new project no one saw coming. A podcast called Parton Me, Nashville on which she comments on current events, shares music and stories and interviews other artists. Stella’s a wonderful host, yet again, following only her own rules.
It’s impossible to sum Stella Parton up in one sentence. That’s one of the many reasons she’s so special. She’s a very unique, free soul, an independent artist, a creative heart not afraid to face new challenges, to say what she thinks and stand up for important matters even though that comes with backlash.
Strong, independent and sure of herself, but also extremely sensitive, delicate and full of empathy. All of the above showing in her actions and shining through the music.
One thing is for sure, if you take a little bit of time to dive into her work, a beautifully complex, multi-layered world is going to welcome you with open arms. The kind of world and emotion no one else can give.
